Those of you who know me well, understand there is little I like more than exploring whether commonly held beliefs really hold water. That's why I loved this post about non-verbal communication from Elizabeth Stokoe.
You'll need to read the post if you want to learn whether your "body language" really does convey 93%, 80%, 70%, 53% or any other % of the message.....and interesting though that is, that's not the main reason for my post today.
What really caught my attention was a quote buried in the blog attached to Elizabeth's post. It was so simple and yet stunningly profound...
"John does not communicate to Mary, and Mary does not communicate to John; Mary and John engage in communication.” Birdwhistell (1970)
Yes! At The Conversation Lab we are frequently asked how can we better at communicating TO x,y, or z? We always re-frame that....communication is a shared endeavour....it takes both parties to enter into a conversation and this simple re-framing unleashes a profoundly different way of approaching things. If you want to know more about how shifting from TO to WITH transforms things....we'd love to have that conversation. Remember, it takes two to tango!
Thanks to Elizabeth Stokoe for the inspiration. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/elizabeth-stokoe-5150a419_93-of-all-misinformation-is-nonverbal-activity-7199738127358271488-y6Wt/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop
